Frequentis has been selected to provide the IP-based voice communications system for the US Navy’s Unmanned Carrier Aviation Mission Control System (UMCS) MD-5 control station, in support of the MQ-25 programme.

The MQ-25A Stingray will be the first operational, carrier-based unmanned aircraft and will provide an aerial refueling capability to the carrier air wing (CVW), extending global reach and operational capabilities.

UMCS is the system-of-systems required to control the MQ-25A air vehicle. The UMCS program manages all infrastructure modifications required on shore and aboard carriers and integration with existing network, command and control communications systems.

Frequentis, based in Columbia, Maryland, will provide engineering and logistics for the design, development, test, manufacture and sustainment of the integrated communications system.

“The Frequentis ICS-C2 solution provides seamless integration into an IP infrastructure and meets both security and safety requirements for mission-critical tactical and operational command and control. We are extremely proud to be supporting the U.S. Navy with secure and effective voice communications for its MQ-25A Stingray,” says John Wherry, Frequentis vice-president defence solutions.

Frequentis human factors experts will ensure that the system is designed with operators in mind, evaluating ease of use, as well enhancing safety and efficiency. Work will be performed in Columbia, Maryland, and is expected to be completed in March 2021.

Frequentis will be exhibiting at DSEI at Excel London, UK, from 10-13 September showcasing the communications system alongside its military grade remote tower solution and its multimedia capable public safety control room solution, LifeX.

Frequentis is currently commencing implementation of the first military remote air traffic control towers for the US DoD, as well as a virtual tower for Santa Cruz airfield in Brazil. The company’s LifeX solution is being implemented for a number of UK and European Public Safety organisations. All solutions will be demonstrated at DSEI in London.
