Simon Mokster placed an order for a second vessel with Astilleros Gondan for a new platform supply vessel (PSV), based on Rolls Royce’s UT 776 WP design, in June 2012. The first vessel Stril Merkur, which was delivered in 2011, is providing services to oil platforms in the North Sea. The state-of-the-art second vessel was launched in October 2013 and delivered on 29 August 2014.

The new vessel, named Stril Luna, will serve Statoil in the North Sea and High North for three years. The contract was signed between Simon Mokster and Statoil in June 2012. The vessel carries and unloads offshore rigs and production platforms. It is also capable of carrying out rescue and fire fighting services.
The new UT 776 WP vessel for Simon Mokster received +1A1, E0, SF, Offshore Service Vessel Supply, DK(+), HL(2.8), LFL*, DYNPOS AUTR, CLEAN DESIGN, COMF-V(2), NAUTOSV(A), OILREC, BWM-T, STANDBY-VESSEL (150), Winterization Basic and ICE 1C class notations from Det Norkse Veritas (DNV).
Platform supply vessel design
The new vessel measures approximately 91.7m-long and has a moulded breadth of 20m. The length between perpendiculars is 82.8m, the depth of the main deck is 8.2m and the draft of the vessel is approximately 6m.
The PSV features a cargo deck area of 1,030m² with a gross tonnage capacity of 4,000t. The deck is constructed to accommodate the ASFA system for automatic fastening of cargo. The bow of the vessel is specially designed to cut through harsh waves, while still sailing at a constant speed with reduced fuel consumption and enhanced safety.
PSV tank capacities and communications
The vessel comprises tanks with capacities for holding 1,850m³ of ballast water, 1,850m³ of drill water, 1,000m³ of fresh water, 350m³ of cement, 180m³ of base oil, 1,060m³ of fuel oil, 900m³ of liquid mud, 600m³ of brine, 340m³ of methanol and 1,500m³ of recovered oil. The PSV accommodates 27 people onboard.
Communication equipment onboard the PSV comprises radio installations based on the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) Area 3 (A3) requirements. The vessel is equipped with basic communication facilities, such as a VHF radio installation or SART, two portable VHF transceivers, a NAVTEX receiver, an Inmarsat C EGC receiver and a 406MHz EPIRB.
Simon Mokster’s PSV command and control system
The command and control system of the vessel comprises the Unified Bridge solution supplied by Rolls Royce. The solution primarily simplifies the range of control levers, console panels and displays for several onboard systems of the new vessel, improving safety and working conditions. It is the first vessel equipped with the solution.
Winches, cranes and propulsion
The new UT 776 WP design vessel for Simon Mokster comprises one double windlass / mooring winch, two tugger winches with a lifting capacity of 15t, two capstans with a lifting capacity of 10t and two deck cranes, with a lifting capacity of 10t at an outreach of ten metres to 14m.
The vessel’s propulsion system comprises two Rolls-Royce Marine’s Azipull120 FP compass thrusters with an output of 2,500kW each with a propeller diameter of 3,200m.
It is powered by four Bergen Diesel C25:33L6ACD generator sets, with a maximum continuous rating (MCR) of 1,843kW each.
The vessel is also equipped with a harbour generator set with an output of 600kW, one TT 2200 DPN FP SuperSilent side thruster with an output of 883kW and a TCNS 73/M-180 FP side thruster with an output of 880kW.
