Disney Dream is a cruise ship being built for Disney Cruise Line, a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company, at Meyer Werft shipyards in Papenburg, Germany. It will be the third ship in the Disney fleet, which consists of Disney Magic and Disney Wonder cruise ships. The ship is scheduled to enter service in January 2011.
The 128,000t ship will have an overall length of 339.8m, a breadth of 37m and a draft of 7.9m. It will have 1,250 cabins to accommodate 4,000 guests and 1,458 crew members.
Design
Disney Dream is being built with the purpose of offering better services to the cruising families segment.
Specially designed areas are being created that will allow family members to enjoy themselves together and individually.
The interior design of the ship will be a combination of murals, fixtures and furnishings, including original paintings, statues and woodwork. The design includes youth activity clubs, restaurants, lounges and theatres.
Construction
In April 2007 a shipbuilding contract was signed between Disney and Meyer Werft for two ships: Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy. The first piece of steel was cut in March 2009.
The ship will be built through a block construction process, which involves joining together pre-fabricated hull sections. Disney Dream will be made from 80 blocks.
State rooms
The Disney Dream staterooms have been designed for families. Various types of room will be provided. Most of the state rooms will feature private verandas. Rooms in the deluxe category will include Concierge Family Ocean View Stateroom with Veranda, Deluxe Family Ocean View Stateroom with Veranda, Deluxe Ocean View Stateroom with Veranda, Deluxe Family Ocean View Stateroom, Deluxe Ocean View Stateroom and Deluxe Inside Stateroom. Others include Standard Inside Stateroom, Concierge One-Bedroom Suite with Veranda and Concierge Royal Suite with Veranda.
Standard staterooms will feature queen-size beds, single convertible sofas, upper berth pull-down beds and baths with showers. Amenities will include mini refrigerators, LCD TVs, iPod docking stations, closets, full-length mirrors, mini safes and toiletries.
Suites will have private verandas, walk-in closets, living rooms, bedrooms and two bathrooms. The master bathrooms will feature whirlpool bathtubs, rain showers, double sinks and TVs. Guests in suites and concierge staterooms will have concierge services and access to dedicated areas.
Dining facilities
The ship will have five restaurants: Animator’s Palate, Cabanas, Enchanted Garden, Palo and Royal Palace. Animator’s Palate will be the main restaurant and will be located on deck three. It will serve contemporary Pacific Rim cuisine. Cabanas on deck 11 will be the indoor / outdoor table service restaurant. Palo, an adult-exclusive restaurant on deck 12, will serve northern Italian cuisine for dinner.
Entertainment facilities
Disney Dream will feature a range of nightclubs and lounges for adults and children. Entertainment venues will provide games and activities, including live music.
The bars will include Bon Voyage, Currents, District Lounge, Meridian, Metro Pub, Pink and Waves and will serve beer, wine and cocktails. Adults-only lounges will also be available.
Youth clubs and children’s entertainment zones will offer games and interactive programmes for children and teens.
The Buena Vista Theatre, located on decks four and five, will screen first-run movies and digital 3D films. The Walt Disney Theatre on deck three will also host Disney live shows and first-run and digital 3D films.
The ship will have three freshwater pools. The Senses Spa and Salon will offer spa treatments and beauty services. The fitness centre on deck 11 will be equipped with the latest machines and offer aerobics and yoga sessions.
