CBO Atlantico Platform Supply Vessel (PSV) is the first in a series of six such vessels being manufactured by the Aliança Shipyard, Brazil, for Companhia Brasileira de Offshore (CBO), an offshore shipping company operating out of Rio de Janeiro.
The vessel was handed over to the ship owner in February 2012 and has been chartered to Brazilian multinational energy corporation Petrobras for a period of eight years.
The second PSV is scheduled to be delivered in the second quarter of 2012. The remaining four vessels are to be delivered during 2012-13.
Ulstein was contracted in 2009 for four PSVs and again in April 2011 for two more to provide class drawings, detailed engineering and naval architect services. The company was given additional responsibility of supplying equipment packages for all vessels.
The company has supplied a power and propulsion plant that comprises main engines, emergency generators and thrusters, an internal communication system, an automation system, winches, navigation and positioning systems.
Construction milestones for the platform supply vessel (PSV)
The contract for the construction of the vessel was signed in January 2010. Keel was laid in November 2010 and the superstructure of the vessel was launched in April 2011. An official naming ceremony for the vessel was held in November 2011 in Rio de Janeiro.
Design style and main features of the Brazilian PSV
CBO Atlantico is the maiden vessel whose design is based on Ulstein PX106 model developed by Ulstein Design & Solutions. The PX106 based vessels are designed for transportation of voluminous and general cargoes to offshore facilities in more effective and flexible ways.
The ship is integrated with Ulstein’s X-BOW hull line based on an inverted bow concept. The unique hull, due to its waterline length and low angles of entry, provides greater transit speed in smooth water.
The hull is extended to the entire length of the beam in accommodation area. This provides additional safety to the working deck and deck installations. Other notable features of the vessel include lower power consumption and fewer emissions, low levels of noise and vibration, as well as lower pitch and heave accelerations.
There are three multitanks onboard the vessel and these are integrated with the CargoMax system, which can be provided with a direct interface to various tanks.
The vessel can complement 24 personnel and can cruise approximately at a speed of 15kt. The vessel complies with DNV’s (Det Norske Veritas) clean design notation.
Technical specifications and capacities of the CBO Atlantico PSV
The PSV measures 76.3m in length and is 16m wide. Length between perpendiculars is 71.7m, while depth to main deck is 7.5m. Design draught and maximum draught are five metres and six metres respectively.
Deadweight of the vessel is approximately 3,690t. Net tonnage and gross tonnage are 831t and 2,767t respectively.
The vessel has a deck load of 2,600t and the cargo deck area measures 660 square metres. Cargo deck strength is 5t/m².
The vessel has tanks with capacities of 280 cubic metres for fuel oil, 105 cubic metres for fresh water, 315 cubic metres for hybrid system, 830 cubic metres for drilling brine and 1,680 cubic metres for potable water. Fuel oil / oil based mud / water based mud tank can store 520 cubic metres.
Propulsion and power of Ulstein’s X-BOW vessel
CBO Atlantico is outfitted with diesel-electric propulsion system. There are three main generator diesel engines. These engines are manufactured by Daihatsu Diesel of Japan and each is capable of producing 1,700ekW.
The vessel is also supplied with a Daihatsu Diesel’s harbour generator and a Scania emergency generator.
The vessel is fitted with two Rolls-Royce side thrusters for smooth manoeuvring. One manoeuvring tunnel thruster is fitted aft, while the second one is fitted forward.
The main propulsion system includes two Rolls-Royce azimuth propulsion thrusters. Each of these is repelled by an electric power unit.
