Ferry charter company Stena RoRo has ordered two new multi-fuel and methanol ready E-Flexer vessels for a long-term charter agreement with the Greek Attica Group.

The agreement adds to the three other E-Flexer vessels on order for the Stena subsidiary at the CMI Jinling, Weihai shipyard in China, which has already delivered 10 of the RoRo ships to the company.

Per Westling, Stena Roro’s managing director, said: “The E-Flexer vessels to Attica have been jointly designed and ordered as the most bespoke E-Flexers so far.

“The design is extremely versatile, and the ships will, with their inherent flexibility of different fuels, battery hybrid operation and many other fuel saving features, play an important role in the green transition of the Attica Superfast Adriatic RoPax service.”

The 10-year agreement is the first from Attica for E-Flexer vessels and includes an option to purchase the two initial ships, set for delivery in early to mid 2027, after five years, in addition to options for two further RoRos.

As well as having multi-fuel engines capable of running on conventional fuel or biodiesel, the two vessels will also be methanol capable and designed to fit with future environmental requirements.

The design has also been given the classification society notation of “Battery power” to recognise the inclusion of the potential for the ships to use batteries as their partial or full means of propulsion in the future.

Attica CEO Panos Dikaios said: “Our agreement with Stena RoRo for the charter of two new state-of-the-art vessels, sets new standards for the entire Greek ferry industry.

“It drastically reduces our environmental footprint, redefines the travel experience and responds dynamically to the challenges of tomorrow.”

The 240m long vessels are the largest RoPax ships ever ordered by a Greek company according to Attica and will have a passenger capacity of 1,500 as well as 3,320 lane metres of cargo deck

The E-Flexer vessel series is a larger class of vessel compared to modern RoPax ferries and features a design concept based around flexibility and reducing its environmental impact.

The series is solely developed by Stena RoRo, which has delivered the 10 existing E-Flexers to a range of companies including Brittany Ferries, DFDS, Marine Atlantic, and Stena Line.
