Greek dry bulk shipping operator Seanergy Maritime Holdings has signed a deal with UK-based SulNOx Group to use its SulNOxEco Fuel Conditioner on a trial basis.

The company will conduct a pilot trial of the technology to explore its use in reducing emissions by making shipping fuel burn more cleanly and efficiently.

Stamatis Tsantanis, Seanergy’s chairman and CEO, said: “We are proactive in exploring technical initiatives that will position Seanergy as a leader in shaping a greener maritime industry.

“SulNOx has proven, compliant solutions that may be quickly deployed to help meet environmental targets and broader ESG milestones.”

The fuel conditioner uses natural ingredients to emulsify water, improve lubricity, and increase oxygen availability to hydrocarbon liquid fuels to ensure a cleaner and more efficient burn while also reducing corrosion to extend the life of fuel pumps and hoses.

SulNOx has already seen the product trialled in the shipping industry through partnerships with companies like Marfin Management, which expanded its trial after the initial pilot reportedly cut bunker fuel consumption by more than 6%, with the CEO subsequently joining SulNOx’s board.

Seanergy’s use of SulNOx's conditioner is part of its efforts to reduce emissions across its 17-vessel fleet with a target of achieving net zero by 2050, in line with industry standards, and interim goals of a 20% reduction in emissions by 2030 and a 70% reduction by 2040.
