Sallaum Lines to upgrade three PCTC vessels with Wärtsilä’s technologies

Cargo shipping services firm Sallaum Lines is upgrading its three pure car/truck carrier (PCTC) vessels with Wärtsilä's EnergoFlow solution and Fixed Pitch Propellers (FPP).

This initiative forms part of the roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) cargo operator’s decarbonisation programme.

Wärtsilä's technologies are expected to boost the vessels’ propulsion efficiency, reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

The order for these upgrades was booked by Wärtsilä in Q4 2024.

The 183m long PCTC ships to be upgraded are 'Silver Queen', 'Silver Moon', and 'Silver Sky'. Each of these ships has a capacity to transport 4,900 cars.

Wärtsilä's Fixed Pitch Propellers are engineered to provide “optimal performance and efficiency” while simultaneously reducing noise and vibration.

A pre-swirl stator designed for the existing fleet market, the EnergoFlow optimises inflow for the propeller while enhancing fuel efficiency and lowering emissions across various operating conditions.

It features curved fins and a ring attached to the ship's hull, reducing power losses in the propeller's slipstream.

Sallaum Lines technical head Puneet Arora said: “Wärtsilä’s Decarbonisation Programme has greatly helped us as we strive to minimise the environmental impact of our operations.

“By adding the Wärtsilä innovations to these three vessels, we are taking an important step forward towards meeting our sustainability goals.”

The shipping industry is required to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, necessitating a transformation in its operations.

This includes the adoption of various carbon reduction practices and technologies, particularly for older vessels such as the 15-year-old PCTC ships in Sallaum Lines' fleet.

Wärtsilä Marine Middle East sales head Rajan Khanna said: “Our Decarbonisation Programme is designed to support owners and operators invest in the most appropriate solutions for their particular vessels.

“With increasing pressure within the industry to decarbonise, we applaud Sallaum Lines for taking action to proactively implement solutions which will help them to maximise operational efficiency and minimise environmental impact of their vessels.”

Last month, Wärtsilä was selected by NovaAlgoma to provide a propulsion package for methanol-ready cement carrier vessel.
