NetTalk Maritime signs Starlink deal

NetTalk Maritime will go beyond the limitations of traditional and expensive satellite communication, it claimed.

Communication solutions company NetTalk Maritime has partnered with SpaceX’s Starlink to transform maritime connection by providing commercial shipping customers with high-speed, low-latency internet solutions.

NetTalk Maritime will operate as an account administrator, providing end-to-end solutions spanning from installation to network configuration and maintenance, as well as full account management services.

Operated by SpaceX, Starlink is the world's first and largest satellite constellation. According to the satellite company, Starlink satellites are in a low orbit, resulting in a low latency of around 25 milliseconds (ms) compared with the industry average of 600ms.

Garry Paxinos, CTO of NetTalk Maritime emphasises how satellite connectivity will enhance passenger experiences.

Paxinos said: "Adding Starlink's high-speed satellite connectivity to our products onboard ships of all sizes greatly enhances our product offering and significantly improves passenger and crew communication experiences.”

Unlike other satellite broadband services, which rely on geostationary satellites travelling at a distance of 35,786km, Starlink runs a constellation of satellites much closer to Earth, at around 550km, and uses a laser mesh network to provide real worldwide coverage.

NetTalk's deal with Starlink is far from the first deal between the Musk-backed satellite comms firm and the shipping sector. Last month Hapag-Lloyd announced it would roll out the system on its entire global fleet.
