Maritime arm of Viasat launches “bonded” network system

Inmarsat Maritime has launched its new communication hub "bonded" network tool.

Inmarsat Maritime, part of ViaSat, has launched a new maritime communications product called NexusWave, using several connections to ensure what it described as global coverage.

The service uses at least three inputs and combines signals to create a “fully managed… bonded multi-dimensional network”. This includes Inmarsat’s Global Xpress Ka-band frequency broadband, low Earth orbit satellite services, and LTE connection when in range of coastal services.

The global communications firm said its “next-generation ultra-high capacity high-speed ViaSat-3 Ka-band service” would be integrated into the product when it launches (it’s expected in 2025).

Data consumption and access are ubiquitous modern challenges for seafarers, and Inmarsat said the new product would give “security and efficiency.”

Ben Palmer, president of Inmarsat Maritime, said: “Maritime operators face ever-growing demand for data consumption and speeds on board their vessels, coupled with the operational challenges of connecting worldwide while ensuring the security and efficiency of their communications. Meeting all these requirements typically relies on multiple, disjointed solutions, resulting in a complex patchwork of data caps, speeds, and coverage, in addition to unverifiable cyber security.

“Truly a game-changer in maritime communications, the new solution gives our customers the confidence to operate on their own terms, anywhere in the world, with complete peace of mind,” according to Palmer.
