Maritime technology company Kongsberg Maritime has agreed with the IEX Group’s swXtch.io to use its cloudSwXtch software in its digital testing and simulation programme.
The software will be used to create a virtual cloud test environment for Kongsberg to test its products, allowing the company to respond faster to changing industry conditions and speed up the introduction of new product innovations for the 30,000 ships that use its technology.
SwXtch.io CEO Brent Yates said: “We're excited to work with Kongsberg Maritime to bring another element of its digital transformation strategy to fruition.
“This selection is another demonstration of how cloudSwXtch is helping businesses bring high-bandwidth workflows to the cloud and successfully integrate multi and hybrid cloud architectures to innovate faster and be more agile.”
Kongsberg's use of the software is part of its ongoing project to transition from the use of its on-site testing to utilising the cloud for testing to reduce costs and increase efficiency, with the cloudSwXtch solution helping to enable multicast in Kongsberg’s Microsoft Azure Cloud.
swXtch.io will also work with systems integrator Sopra Steria to implement its solution, which it says will help improve energy efficiency, reduce waste and minimise emissions.
The swXtch.io agreement follows Kongsberg’s selection of software company Clevr to help with aspects of its internal digital transformation, including by using its product lifecycle management solutions to improve operational efficiency across the company.
Kongsberg’s digital transformation is indicative of a wider transition within the maritime industry to capitalise on the efficiencies that can be gained from moving processes from the physical world to a digital one, though some have said that the industry needs to accelerate innovation in the sector and quickly modernise legacy systems.
