The Exmar and Seapeak joint venture, EXMAR LPG BV, has announced ammonia as the fuel choice for the two midsize gas carriers (MGCs) currently under construction at the Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in South Korea.

According to Exmar, the 46,000m³ volume MGC’s are set to be delivered in 2026.

Exmar was founded in 1829 and has maintained a long-standing reputation in ship design while also boasting over 40 years of experience in ammonia-based services.

The two ships will join Exmar's current fleet of 17 midsize carriers, which includes the 38000m³ newly added LPG carriers Waasmunster, Warinsart, Waregem and Warisoulx.

Exmar executive director Carl Antoine Saverys emphasised the carbon reduction potential of ammonia: “As leading global transporters of ammonia, we are proud to be developing vessels with an operational carbon footprint reduction of 90%, which significantly exceeds the International Maritime Organization's emissions reduction targets.

“This is possible thanks to the decades of experience of EXMAR’s operational and technical teams and the joint effort and contribution of all our project partners.”

The project, which emphasises collaboration, will oversee the engines being delivered by WinGD and the fuel supply system by Wartsila.

Exmar stated that throughout the ship design process, they put emphasis on operational safety when introducing toxic substances to an engine room.
