Brunvoll supplies propulsion for VARD project

New thrusters and control systems have been developed to give better control for SOVs.

Propulsion system developer and producer Brunvoll will provide a “comprehensive propulsion system” to VARD for its latest Service Operation Vessel (SOV) project.

The Norwegian company will supply a range of hardware, including two azimuth propulsion thrusters, two retractable azimuth thrusters, a tunnel thruster, and Bruvoll’s Propulsion and Thruster control system.

The azimuth propulsion thrusters will be the first deliveries of Brunvoll’s new design with an 8-degree tilted propeller and nozzle, the company said.

“The tilted propeller contributes to increased efficiency in terms of reduced thruster and hull interaction, known as the Koanda effect. It also reduces the dead zones for the azimuth thruster, where the propeller wake normally interacts with the skeg or other thrusters on the vessel,” a statement explained.

The new systems will be delivered to the Vietnam shipyard belonging to VARD, another Norweigan company.

Vung Tau shipyard is building the VARD-designed vessel for Cyan Renewables, a Singaporean shipowner specialising in offshore wind SOVs.

The 85-metre vessel is expected to be delivered in 2026 and will operate for Siemens Gamesa at the Hai Long Offshore wind farm in Taiwan.

“Brunvoll is proud to partner with VARD and Cyan, and it’s a pleasure to welcome Cyan, as Asia’s first dedicated offshore wind vessel owner, as a customer of Brunvoll. We would also like to thank VARD for once again returning to Brunvoll with new and exciting projects and opportunities,” said Bernt Rune Riksfjord, VP sales at Brunvoll.
