Wärtsilä has secured a contract to provide its 31DF dual-fuel engine to French operator Ponant’s new polar ice-class luxury cruise vessel.
The 150m-long vessel is currently being built at Vard Søviknes in Norway and will run primarily on liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the environmentally sensitive Arctic and Antarctic regions.
As part of the new contract, Wärtsilä will deliver four 14-cylinder and two ten-cylinder 31DF engines, as well as the fuel gas supply system.
Wärtsilä will also provide its Nacos Platinum advanced navigation equipment, which can later be integrated with Wärtsilä unit Eniram’s energy management system to deliver predictive insights and mobile alerts.
Delivery of the Wärtsilä equipment is expected to take place by 2020.
Ponant general secretary Charles Gravatte said: “We have ordered the building of a clean ship, featuring technologies that go beyond current industry-standard environmental regulations.

By GlobalData“This is why we have chosen a propulsion format with Wärtsilä’s highly efficient 31DF engine running on LNG.”
Ponant’s vessel will be the 12th unit in its current fleet of cruise ships. All the company’s previous vessels are powered by Wärtsilä engines.
Wärtsilä Marine Solutions South Europe and Africa regional sales director Glenn Mattas said: “Wärtsilä’s cutting-edge technologies are making a huge contribution to creating cleaner, more efficient, and more environmentally sustainable shipping.”
Last month, Wärtsilä was selected to provide an integrated cargo handling and fuel gas system for two new gas carrier vessels to be operated by Belgium-based fleet owner Exmar.
