Stena Line has announced a partnership with Norsepower to equip a methanol hybrid RoRo vessel, Stena Connecta, with two Norsepower Rotor Sails.

This initiative is part of Stena Line’s commitment to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by 30% by 2030.

Built by Jinling Weihai Shipyard in China, the vessel is scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of this year.

The 147m Connecta will feature two 28x4m Norsepower Rotor Sails, which will provide up to 9% fuel savings on its route between Belfast and Heysham.

To ensure an eco-friendly project execution phase, the Norsepower Rotor Sails will be produced at Norsepower’s new facility in Yancheng, China, and delivered directly to the shipyard.

Norsepower CEO Heikki Pontynen said: “We are honoured to work with Stena Line, a company that has consistently led the way in sustainable shipping innovation.

“This partnership underscores the reliability and quality of Norsepower’s products, as well as its alignment with Stena Line’s forward-thinking goals to cut CO2 emissions by 30% by 2030.”

Stena Connecta’s sister vessel, Stena Futura, is also being prepared for potential rotor sail installation.

Stena Line fleet chief operating officer Dennis Tetzlaff said: “Stena Line recently launched our new ship, Stena Connecta, into the water and it will now be fitted out with two rotor sails.

“These sails will harness wind power to provide auxiliary propulsion to the vessel, therefore reducing fuel consumption and emissions.”

In May last year, Stena Line announced plans to enhance the cargo capacity of two vessels by 30% by adding an extra cargo deck, aiming to improve efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions per unit.

Stena RoRo, a sister company, contracted China Merchants Jinling (Weihai) Shipyard for the conversion of the Stena Foreteller and Stena Forerunner.
