Singaporean telecommunications company Singtel has joined forces with Swedish telecommunications firm Ericsson to implement 5G connectivity solutions at Tuas Port in Singapore.
The initiative is part of PSA Singapore’s efforts toward the development of the world’s largest fully automated port by the 2040s to support the growing demand for global trade.

This collaboration is expected to enhance the operational efficiency of automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and streamline crane operations, facilitating seamless cargo transportation.
To facilitate these advancements, Singtel will introduce a network slice from its 5G network to ensure that the high-speed, high-bandwidth, and low-latency requirements of mission-critical applications are met.
The company will also establish secure private networks to protect against data breaches and unauthorised access, addressing the port’s specific security needs.

Starting in 2025, Singtel’s 5G network slicing capabilities will enable driverless AGVs at PSA to transport containers independently. The low-latency communication will allow operators to remotely control cranes and manage cargo with precision.
The deployment of 5G technology is expected to enable PSA to handle an annual capacity of 65 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs).
Singtel Singapore CEO Ng Tian Chong said: “5G’s high speeds and low latency help to improve real-time communication and data transfer which enables highly efficient port operations.
“With network slicing, these capabilities are augmented with increased security features and higher performance assurance.”
In the next three years, PSA also plans to explore 5G applications for predictive maintenance, utilising drone surveillance and extended reality to prevent equipment failure and enhance efficiency.
