Royal Caribbean International (RCL) has opened a new terminal at PortMiami in the US to facilitate handling of its new ships.

Developed in collaboration with Miami-Dade County, the new Terminal A will accommodate RCL’s Oasis-class cruise vessel Symphony of the Seas and its sister ship Allure of the Seas.

Before construction of the terminal, which started in March last year, the port deepened the quayside channel by more than 50ft.

RCL has provided funding to build Terminal A, which is set to be certified as a green building by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) programme.

RCL Commercial Development and Construction associate vice-president and Terminal A project boss Miguel Reyna said: “This is a public, private partnership with Miami-Dade County.

“Most terminals at the port are operated by PortMiami. This one will be operated by a subsidiary of Royal Caribbean.”

The glass-enclosed, ultra-modern structure has been developed to complete Customs and Border Patrol checks via radial-shaped queues.

Terminal A is equipped with several advanced technologies to support PortMiami’s future endeavours.

It is expected to host Symphony of the Seas for its regular seven-night sailings soon after the vessel is officially named next week.

It is expected to generate $500m in revenue and create 4,000 jobs in Miami-Dade County.
