Port of Kiel in Germany has installed Wabtec’s sustainable shore power solution, ShoreCONNECT, to help cruise vessels lower carbon emissions.
As a mobile carrier system, ShoreCONNECT removes the requirement to use diesel by offering electrical power to ships at port.
This solution can minimise fuel consumption as well as reduce almost all emissions from cruise ships while they are anchored at the port.
ShoreCONNECT will also cut down noise and vibrations as the engines of the vessels will be turned off while connected to the solution.
Wabtec power collection vice-president Olivier Kompaore said: “The installation of our ShoreCONNECT solution will advance the port’s sustainability efforts.
“A large cruise ship typically burns through 30,000 litres of diesel every eight to ten hours it spends at port. ShoreCONNECT provides cruise operators a clean, alternative power source while berthing, which reduces operating costs, emissions and noise.”

By GlobalDataKiel’s solution will attach one vessel to shore power with a vehicle providing up to 16MVA emission-free, high-voltage self-propulsion.
ShoreCONNECT has also been deployed at Port of Kiel’s ferry terminal.
Wabtec noted that its system can also fulfil the shore-power needs of big vessels.
The solution comprises a complete automated tidal-range compensation and can be managed swiftly by a single operator.
According to Wabtec, ShoreCONNECT has the capacity to cut down carbon emissions by 12,000 tonnes on a yearly basis.
Kompaore added: “The Ports of Kiel and the Port of Rostock are focused on running progressive, sustainable operations.
“These ShoreCONNECT installations will position them to help address the required 40% reduction in CO₂ emissions from ships by 2030 and support the local sulphur emission control area established in the Baltic region.”
