Siemens Smart Infrastructure has been commissioned by Germany’s Port of Kiel for the deployment of a Cloud-based power monitoring solution for its shore power system.
Also developed by Siemens, the port’s shore power system will provide green power to the vessels berthed at the Ostseekai and Schwedenkai connecting points.
The system is expected to cut down more than 8,000tpa of CO₂.
The new power monitoring solution will keep a track of the energy consumption in the shore power operations building, as well as Schwedenkai and Ostseekai.
This solution will also accumulate the collected data in Siemens’ Cloud-based MindSphere IoT system.
By accessing all applicable electrical values at any time and place, operators can limit consumption, detect faults, avoid downtimes, and plan maintenance routines accordingly.

By GlobalDataPort of Kiel managing director Dr Dirk Claus said: “With our shore power system, we are playing a pioneering role and making an active contribution to climate protection. By systematically recording the power data and storing it in the Cloud, the system operator can now determine the efficiency of the systems at any time, i.e. how much energy is actually being drawn. This allows to quickly respond to any anomalies if necessary.”
The data is collected using the 7KM PAC series measuring devices and sent to MindSphere through the Powercenter 3000 IoT data platform.
This data can then be seen on the integrated web server or the Sentron ‘powermind’ app.
Siemens electrical products CEO Andreas Matthé said: “Accurate knowledge of energy flows is crucial in order to ensure that operations run smoothly from a technical point of view and are ecologically, as well as economically sustainable, whether in industry or infrastructure.
“Our solution provides the Port of Kiel with an uncomplicated digital energy data management and makes the operation of its shore power system even more efficient.”
The Port of Kiel, which is the starting point for many cruises, provides ferry connections to Scandinavia and the Baltic states.
Around 32 cruise ships brought about 800,000 passengers to Kiel in 2019.
In May 2019, the first shore power system was custom-built at Norwegenkai.
