Estonian shipowner Platano Eesti has selected SeaQuest Marine Project Management to supervise the construction of a new purpose-built, Polar Code-compliant ice-class bulk carrier.
SeaQuest previously assisted Platano Eesti with contractual technical negotiations, manufacturer selection and plan approval activities related to the vessel.
The construction of the new 107,000dwt vessel is scheduled to begin in March at CSSC Shanghai Shipyard in China and is expected to be completed by next year.
The vessel will feature a variety of new solutions to ensure its ability to conduct year-round operation in and out of Arctic waters.
Platano Eesti’s new, 250m-long vessel will have a holding capacity of 130,000m³ and is set to include advanced marine technology for navigation in arctic waters, both with and without ice breaker assistance.
It will also be capable of loading and discharging on its own.

Platano Eesti managing director Maxim Romce said: “The Arctic offers new opportunities and now is the time to embrace them, but there are challenges and this is why innovative thinking is required.
“Our aim is to build a vessel that will outperform those currently trading in the Arctic area, while still remaining competitive on conventional operating routes.
“Taking into consideration the fact that the Arctic area, and its port infrastructure, is still not sufficiently developed, we have strategically decided to equip the vessel with cranes and grabs to assist the local shippers in maximising their export efficiency.”
SeaQuest has already identified all technical issues regarding the new vessel, particularly those related to design efficiency, energy efficiency design index (EEDI), fuel consumption and Polar Code / Ice Class compliance.
