International seafarers’ support charity Sailor’s Society is partnering with the Homer Foundation to provide fishing boats to the families of struggling seafarers in Philippines.
The aim of the project is to relieve the pressure on the Filipino seafaring community and strengthen the local industry. The project is being funded by donations received from the global shipping industry.
The Visayas region in the Philippines houses a large number of the world’s seafarers who were affected by the super typhoon Haiyan in November 2013.
Sailor’s Society said that the project aims to provide support for seafarers and their families by giving them a source of income.
The Society funded a number of boats in Panay and Roxas City soon after the typhoon hit the region.
Sailor’s Society’s Subic Bay chaplain Jasper del Rosario said: “The launch project is a great success. I spent time with the family of one seafarer who is currently away at sea. His father is ill and cannot work, so the fishing boat Sailors’ Society has provided, means his wife and extended family are able to fill the income gap.”
