Emerging Markets Communications (EMC), a unit of Global Eagle Entertainment (GEE), has been contracted to provide marine VSAT services for Nakilat’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carrier fleet.

As part of the deal, EMC has provided global Ku-band VSAT connectivity and content to allow a range of internet, data and voice services for the vessels and crew whilst at sea.

The onboard satellite communication suite features a high-quality voice-over-IP system for the corporate network, which will reduce the costs of voice calls over the satellites.

The crew welfare system, installed as part of the deal, provides round-the-clock internet connectivity to communicate with family and friends at home.

Eight vessels owned by Nakilat, the shipping arm of Qatar’s liquefied natural gas sector, have already been equipped with VSAT connectivity.

Nakilat administration director Rashid Hamad Al-Marri said, “We are delighted to sign this agreement with EMC, which will significantly contribute to the development of the communication systems’ infrastructure and facilitate Nakilat’s maritime operations.

“As an owner of one of the largest LNG fleets in the world, staying connected while at sea is essential for Nakilat’s global operations.

“By utilising EMC’s VSAT technology, we are able to ensure real-time information is accessible and that our personnel can stay in touch with their families during the vessel’s voyage, while at the same time realise cost savings for the company.”

EMC provides global coverage and network infrastructure to the maritime sector.

The company also has a suite of patented technologies to offer modern voice, internet and high-speed data services to the ships at sea.

In April, GEE entered into an exclusive agreement with German television programming provider RTL International to deliver a new German TV channel to cruise ships sailing worldwide.
