

Classification society DNV GL is set to launch an advanced hull and propeller performance analytics module as part of the new fleet performance management service, ECO Insight.
According to DNV GL, this new module is based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods to correct changing operational conditions and provide more accurate results than existing approximate or experimental methods.
DNV GL fleet performance management head Dr Torsten Büssow said: "We use data that shipping companies are already collecting.
"Our CFD capabilities, which we also use in our lines optimisation, retrofit and trim assistant services, allow us to very accurately normalise vessel specific power demand under each reported condition."
According to experts, due to the hull fouling the world fleet could be sailing with around 30% added resistance and significantly higher levels of fuel consumption.
Shipping companies have recognised that regular hull and propeller cleaning will enable vessels to enhance their efficiency; however, when and how to undertake hull and propeller cleaning are yet to be addressed systematically, DNV GL stated.
Hull and propeller performance computations help operators understand how much resistance is added over time due to fouling, through analysing the gap between the theoretical and measured power demand of a vessel.
DNV GL’s ECO Insight offers a complete and easily accessible way to manage the performance of a fleet, including voyage, hull and propeller, engine and systems performance.
