Crowley Maritime Corporation has christened the first of four new liquefied natural gas (LNG) ready product tankers at the Tampa Cruise Terminal.
The 600ft-long Ohio was constructed by Aker Philadelphia Shipyard (APSI), the wholly-owned US subsidiary of Aker Philadelphia Shipyard.
Meanwhile, Jensen Maritime, Crowley’s Seattle-based, naval architecture and marine engineering subsidiary, provided construction management services for the vessels.
The 50,000dwt tanker is based on a Hyundai Mipo Dockyards (HMD) design and has a barrel-capacity totalling 330,000dwt.
The tankers meet the latest regulatory requirements and incorporate numerous fuel efficiency features.
The vessel which will be used to carry crude oil or refined petroleum products has already made two voyages carrying clean petroleum products to Florida.

By GlobalDataThe remaining three product tankers are also being built by APSI for Crowley and have planned deliveries through 2016.
The tanker has received the American Bureau of Shipping’s (ABS) LNG-Ready Level One approval that will enable the company to convert the tanker to LNG propulsion in the future.
Crowley chairman, president and CEO Tom Crowley Jr. Said: “Crowley is proud to welcome this historical vessel into service.
“As the first of its kind to officially be LNG-ready, it is a testament to Crowley’s promise to seek additional ways to exceed the technological requirements of our petroleum customers while doing our part to reduce environmental emissions.”
In September, APSI agreed to sell its interest in the Joint venture that includes the operation and chartering of four product tankers with Crowley Maritime to a subsidiary of Marathon Petroleum.
APSI will invest in the vessels during their construction, but will no longer maintain the previously planned long-term investment in the vessels post-delivery, which was expected to be approximately $110m in the aggregate.
