Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL) has revealed Scotland-based Ferguson Shipbuilders as the preferred bidder to build the world’s first two seagoing ro-ro vehicle and passenger diesel electric hybrid ferries.
Ferguson will work alongside Glasgow-based ship design firm Seatec and electrical specialist Tec-Source to build the vessels.
The ferries will use green technology such as battery banks, which will meet 20% of energy requirements.
The ships will be powered by small diesel generator sets that will supply power to a 400V switchboard and the electric propulsion motors.
The two ferries will accommodate 150 passengers, 23 cars or 2HGVs, with a service speed of 9kt and, following delivery, they will be operated by CalMac Ferries.
The first vessel will enter service in Q2 2013, with the second following six months later.
