Classification society ClassNK has issued a statement of compliance (SoC) to Isiksan Ship Recycling and Trading, which marks the first issuance of its kind to a ship recycling facility in Turkey.
The facilities at Isiksan were verified and found to be in compliance with the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, 2009 (HKC), which has not yet entered into force.
Isiksan had previously carried out improvements to its facility in order to move toward safer and greener ship recycling activities.
Additionally, the company has developed the Ship Recycling Facility Plan (SRFP), which has also been reviewed and confirmed by ClassNK.
The SRFP is required for a competent authority’s certification, according to the HKC. ClassNK also conducted on-site inspections at the facility prior to issuing the SoC.
ClassNK Ship Recycling Team Project Manager Junichi Hirata said: “ClassNK is glad to issue the HKC Statement of Compliance and make its first step in Turkish ship recycling facilities.
