Arctech Helsinki Shipyard has delivered a new liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered icebreaker, Polaris, to the Finnish Transport Agency.

After receiving Polaris, which has an icebreaking capacity of 1.8m at a speed of 3.5kt, the Finnish Transport Agency has handed over the vessel to Arctia Icebreaking.

Built at Helsinki Shipyard, Finland, the vessel has been designed to have a lifespan of around 50 years for icebreaking, oil recovery and sea rescue operations.

Capable of using either liquefied natural gas or low sulphur diesel oil as fuel, Polaris features a new hull design and propulsion unit planning.

Built in compliance with international IMO Tier III emission standards, and special requirements for Sulphur emissions in the Baltic Sea, the vessel has three Azipod propulsion units.

With a workforce of around 600 shipbuilders, Arctech currently builds icebreakers and other arctic offshore and special vessels.

In December last year, the company began construction of the first of four icebreaking vessels ordered by Russia’s Sovcomflot.
