Switzerland’s ABB has entered into a deal with Chinese ship yard Wuchang Ship Building Group to develop greener ships and digital solutions.

Under the deal, ABB will offer its power and propulsion, as well as its expertise in maritime software to help Wuchang Ship Building Group to build efficient and technologically advanced vessels.

Spread across an area of 6,000,000m², Wuchang Ship Building Group is currently involved in building research and offshore vessels.

"ABB’s long history of working in the icebreaking and cruise sectors is particularly relevant to China’s ship builders."

ABB China marine and ports business head Alf Kare Adnanes said: “Chinese shipyards are diversifying their portfolios and ABB’s long history of working in the icebreaking and cruise sectors is particularly relevant to China’s ship builders.

“We are excited about the benefits this agreement will bring to both ABB and Wuchang Ship Building Group.”

In 2011, the company opened an Azipod propulsion manufacturing plant in Shanghai, China.

Having presence in more than 100 countries, ABB offers electrification products, robotics and motion, as well as industrial automation and power grids, and other solutions.

Earlier last month, ABB won a contract to provide its Octopus marine software to South Korea-based heavy lift company TPI Megaline.

Once delivered, the software will ensure safe and efficient operations on one of the Mega Caravan semi-submersible vessels operated by TPI Megaline.

The ABB software will also help Mega Caravan, which transports oil rigs and drill ships, with poor weather and acceleration conditions.
