ABB has been selected to provide the power, propulsion and energy storage solution for two COSCO built vessels operating in the offshore oil and gas sector.
The systems will cater to the vessel’s requirement for an advanced propulsion and power generation system to operate.
The company will leverage on its Azipod D technology to allow the vessels to achieve safe precision at open sea.
Azipod D is the company’s upgraded podded electric propulsion system. It consists of a hybrid cooling system that uses a combination of direct seawater cooling and produces internal air cooling which enhances the electric motor performance by up to 45%.
BU Marine and Ports managing director Juha Koskela said: "The solutions we are providing will make these ships incredibly flexible and efficient to operate.
"The Azipod D, Onboard DC Grid and energy storage are cutting edge technologies which match the demanding conditions often experienced in the offshore sector."

By GlobalDataAzipod D fitted with the Azipod propulsor’s 360 degree steerable propeller fulfils manoeuvrability and station keeping requirements of the vessels.
The vessels will also be incorporated with DC Grid which is expected to reduce fuel consumption to 27% and allows the ships’ four 3600kW generators, also supplied by ABB, to operate at variable and optimum speed.
The set of batteries installed in the ship allows optimised use of the power resources, as well as helps in reducing energy consumption.
The vessels will also be incorporated with ABB engineered remote diagnostic service to keep the vessels online with ABB’s shore side technical support centres where the technicians can monitor the performance of the vessel and ensure necessary support.
Last December, ABB won a contract to provide power, propulsion and automation for an advanced port icebreaker being built by Russia’s Vyborg Shipyard to support the Yamal LNG project in Siberia.
