Kongsberg Maritime has received a contract to supply an integrated equipment package for UK-based Bibby Marine’s new eCSOV, which is claimed to be the world’s “first” full-electric offshore vessel.
The anticipated delivery date for the eCSOV is set for 2027.
The comprehensive package from Kongsberg Maritime will include full-electric rim-drive propulsion, azimuth and tunnel thrusters, forming the foundation of the vessel’s advanced systems.
The contract will also cover automation, electrical control, dynamic positioning, and thruster control systems.
Bibby Marine new build project director Gavin Forward said: “We are thrilled to embark on this pioneering journey with Kongsberg Maritime as one of our partners.
“This groundbreaking vessel, equipped with Kongsberg’s fully integrated package, including Rim Drive thruster units, will ensure our optimal efficiency and operational excellence.”
Bibby Marine has commissioned the service operation vessel from Armon shipyard in Spain, to operate the hybrid vessel entirely on electricity for up to a full day.
The vessel will be powered by the 25MWh Blue Whale battery energy storage system from Corvus Energy, a lithium iron phosphate system that is claimed to be the “largest” maritime battery installation to date.
This technology will enable the eCSOV to run on electricity alone for 24 hours. The vessel’s engines will be dedicated to charging purposes, which is expected to prolong battery life and reduce emissions.
A DC grid configuration will be employed to minimise energy losses, while offshore charging systems will facilitate simultaneous battery charging and dynamic positioning operations.
The equipment supplied by Kongsberg Maritime is designed to integrate seamlessly with the battery system, enhancing onboard energy utilisation.
Kongsberg Maritime offshore sales director Birger Teien Evensen said: “We are delighted to be part of this groundbreaking project with Bibby Marine, as they take hybrid operations in the offshore market, to the next level.
“Our integrated package of advanced maritime technologies will ensure the new eCSOV operates with unparalleled efficiency and sustainability, setting a new standard for the industry.”
Last week, Kongsberg Maritime unveiled a mooring solution for OSCVs, expanding their capabilities to include pre-laying mooring lines along with their existing suction anchor functions.
