AD Ports Group, a developer of ports and related infrastructure in Abu Dhabi, has announced the opening of the AED3.1bn ($353.8m) CMA Terminals Khalifa Port.

The new terminal boosts Khalifa Port’s annual container capacity by 23%, bringing it to nearly ten million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs).

The terminal is a collaboration between CMA CGM Group’s subsidiary CMA Terminals holding a 70% stake and AD Ports Group holding a 30% stake.

It is equipped with advanced facilities such as automated gates, integrated systems for improved efficiency, and sustainable operations, including shore-power capabilities and solar panels.

The facility also features state-of-the-art equipment including eight Ship to Shore (STS) cranes and 20 Electric Rubber Tyred Gantry (e-RTG) cranes.

CMA CGM Group chairman and CEO Rodolphe Saade said: “The inauguration of our new container terminal is a major step in the development of Khalifa Port, consolidating Abu Dhabi’s position as a global trade hub.”

The opening of the CMA Terminals Khalifa Port marks the completion of phase one of the new terminal and introduces a quay wall of 800m and 18.5m depth to the port.

AD Ports Group CEO and managing director Captain Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi said: “CMA Terminals Khalifa Port will significantly boost Abu Dhabi’s connectivity, reinforcing its vital role on the global trade map and contributing to local economic diversification in line with the vision of our leadership.

“This new facility places AD Ports Group firmly in the ranks of the world’s leading global port operators.”

The new terminal positions the Khalifa Port as a pivotal gateway for the Middle East. The port now spans over 6.3km2, equipped with 41 quay cranes, 159 yard cranes, and extensive quay wall and breakwater lengths.

In 2023, AD Ports Group joined forces with Vietnam Maritime Administration (Vinamarine) to enhance maritime operations and deepen UAE-Vietnam relations.

The two parties signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) developing a partnership focused on ports, logistics, digital solutions and shipping. The MoU stressed a focus on dry ports and inland containers.
