Hanwha Power Systems, an energy equipment solutions provider for the maritime sector, part of Hanwha Group, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with GasLog to plan and demonstrate a conversion of its LNG carrier fleet’s propulsion systems to ammonia gas turbines.
The MoU, which are generally not binding, followed a feasibility study carried out by Hanwha Power Systems and Hanwha Ocean of the Greek ship owner’s fleet. This examined both economic and engineering facets of the proposed conversions.
The two companies will now discuss the demonstration plan to replace GasLog’s 21 existing fossil fuel-powered vessels with eco-friendly ammonia gas turbines.
“Following the signing of this MoU, Hanwha Power Systems and GasLog, as strategic partners, will continue their collaboration focusing on performance, economic and compliance assessments from a comprehensive perspective to promote the application of ammonia gas turbines in vessel retrofits,” Hanwa Power Systems explained in a statement.
With incoming emissions targets and rules on the horizon, Hanwa Group has been “actively developing” a new ammonia combustion system.
“These development activities include a successful full-scale, high-pressure test campaign. The PSM Ammonia Combustion System is planned to be implemented with a gas turbine intended for this propulsion power application,” it said.
