Great Lakes Dredge & Dock (Great Lakes), a provider of dredging services in the US, has announced the receipt of several dredging awards totalling $182m.

The contracts are set to bolster coastal protection in New Jersey, South Carolina, New York, and Florida.

The Manasquan Inlet to Barnegat Inlet Ocean City Beach Renourishment Project in New Jersey is a major component of the awarded work, valued at $73.6m.

This project aims to reduce coastal storm damage by maintaining an engineered beach along a 13-mile stretch of shoreline, covering multiple municipalities.

An additional $41.4m in open options pending award is associated with this project, which is expected to commence in the first quarter of 2025 and conclude by the third quarter of the same year. The US Army Corps of Engineers, Philadelphia District, is the client, with federal funding in place.

In South Carolina, the $72.3m Myrtle Beach Renourishment Project involves the placement of dredged material to refurbish the beaches of Myrtle, Garden City, and Surfside.

Great Lakes has a history of performing similar work in these areas, with projects completed in 2007 and 2018.

The US Army Corps of Engineers, Charleston District, is the client for this federally funded project, which is slated to start in the fourth quarter of 2025 and finish in early 2026.

In New York, the Sagaponack and Bridgehampton Beach Erosion Control District Nourishment Project, valued at $19.6m, will address dune and infrastructure damage caused by beach erosion.

This locally funded project is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2025 and be completed by the second quarter.

Meanwhile, the Phipps Ocean Park Beach Nourishment Project in Florida, worth $16.5m, will restore areas damaged by Hurricanes Ian and Nicole.

The Town of Palm Beach is the client for this state and locally funded project, with work anticipated to start at the end of 2024 and finish in the first quarter of 2025.

Great Lakes president and CEO Lasse Petterson said: “Our coastlines are facing ongoing damage from storms, rising water levels, and broader impacts of climate change.

“These coastal protection projects will support revitalising and enhancing shoreline protections which is a critical infrastructure priority in the US. These important projects add to our expanding record backlog of work for 2025.”
