Norwegian lighting solutions provider Glamox has secured a contract to provide comprehensive lighting solutions for two new salvage tugs commissioned by the Suez Canal Authority.

The vessels, crucial for maintaining the flow of traffic through the pivotal Suez Canal, will be constructed by Alexandria Shipyard in Egypt and are set to be equipped with advanced LED technology.

The lighting equipment is designed to meet the demands of maritime operations, with the tugs being built to Kongsberg Maritime’s UT 722 CDT design.

Each tug, measuring 71.6m in length and weighing approximately 200t, will be outfitted with around 780 marine-certified lights from Glamox.

Glamox offshore and wind division chief sales and commercial officer Tommy Stranden said: “The Suez Canal is an artery for world trade, so we’re delighted that our marine lighting is trusted to help keep open the world’s most important canal.

“It is estimated that approximately $10bn of goods a day pass through the Suez Canal. These vessels will become a critical part of the canal’s infrastructure going forward.”
