DNV GL is offering a free online Ship Implementation Plan (SIP) for shipowners and managers ahead of updated sulphur cap rules coming into force next year.
The web-based application will allow shipowners and managers to prepare vessel-based SIPs while maintaining an overview of their fleet.
Although it is not mandatory, the online adaptation forms part of International Maritime Organisation guidance that all ships are encouraged to implement in preparation for 1 January 2020, when sulphur oxide emissions will be capped at 0.5%.
DNV GL Maritime Business Development manager Christos Chryssakis said: “As we approach 2020, good preparation will be essential to ensure a smooth transition into using compliant low-sulphur fuels.
“This includes technical actions such as hardware upgrades, tank cleaning and a fuel changeover plan, but also commercial preparations like updating charter party clauses and agreements between owners and charterers on how to best prepare each vessel to minimise operational disruptions.
“It is important to build flexibility into the plans to make sure ships are prepared for using different types of compliant fuels, depending on their availability.”
