DNV GL has awarded an Approval in Principle (AiP) to Norwegian company ShipInox for its new small-scale LNG carrier/bunker vessel design.
DNV GL said that this was the first ever class-approved design based on an offshore supply vessel (OSV).
The 92m long ship will be capable of carrying 6,000m³.
ShipInox CEO Rune Østbøe said: “A diverse range of companies spanning Innovation Norway, to the LNG-specialists at Torgy, and Fearnleys, have all enabled us to deliver on this design.
“We are now in a position where we can help to accelerate entries into small-scale LNG with this fast-to-market and low-cost LNG carrier.”
DNV GL – Maritime senior vice-president Trond Hodne said that the vessel design could be a viable option for owners who wish to move into different segments in a challenging market.

By GlobalDataAiP is an independent assessment of a concept within an agreed framework and confirms that the design is feasible and has no significant obstacles that prevent the concept from being realised.
Typically carried out at an early stage of a project, the approval will confirm its feasibility towards the project team itself, company management, external investors or future regulators.
DNV GL – Maritime Gas Carriers business director Johan Petter Tutturen said: “This AiP is the result of an excellent cooperative process that included a feasibility workshop with the designers, the Norwegian Maritime Authorities, an OSV owner, and DNV GL experts.
“We have been able to ensure that this novel design is in full compliance with the 2016 IGC Code and with the relevant class rules.”
DNV GL recently issued a factual statement confirming that Samsung Heavy Industries’ (SHI) integrated smart ship solution INTELLIMAN Ship complies with the EU-MRV and IMO-DCS regulations.
The software facilitates data management from fleet operation to life-cycle service on shore as well as onboard with the latest ICT in a cloud data centre developed by SHI.
