Norwegian ship classification organisation DNV GL has secured a contract to install its hull maintenance system on Saipem’s vessels.
Known as ShipManager Hull, the system will be installed on five of the Saipem ships.
The installation will start with Saipem 7000, a crane vessel that has a lifting capability of around 14,000t.
ShipManager Hull will also be implemented on crane vessel FDS2 (2011), as well as pipelaying vessels FDS (2000), Castorone (2012) and Constellation (2014).
Crane ships require special attention to structural integrity as they face high stresses during lifting. Due to repeated ballasting, it becomes vital for ship-owners to ensure efficient monitoring of ballast tank corrosion.
Using 3D digital twins of the entire structure, Saipem will be able to plan optimised examinations and dry-dock repairs of the structure periodically.
