By GlobalData“The pioneering steps towards increased sustainability they have taken are commendable and will, I am sure, serve as inspiration for other ports. I am looking forward to continuing to build on our relationship, as both Damen and the Port of Antwerp-Bruges continue to pursue solutions towards a sustainable maritime future.”
The port’s commitment to sustainability is further evidenced by its various initiatives aimed at carbon neutrality. These include renewing its fleet with more efficient vessels and retrofitting existing ships to operate on alternative, cleaner fuels.
Port of Antwerp-Bruges COO Rob Smeets said: “We are thrilled to welcome the six state-of-the-art tugs, including an electric model, into our fleet. With each new addition, we move closer to achieving our emission targets towards a greener future.”
Damen’s delivery extends beyond the tugs themselves, encompassing a 1.5MW charging station and the necessary onshore electrical infrastructure.
In addition, Damen Services’ comprehensive support package ensures smooth integration of the new vessels into the port’s operations. This includes extensive training for crews, covering simulator-based, technical, and onboard training, which commenced well before the vessels’ arrival and will continue over the next five years.
The tugs were part of a larger shipment transported from Damen’s yard in Vietnam on the Jumbo Kinetic.
