Norwegian Cruise Line (NCLH) has placed an order with Fincantieri for the construction of two next-generation ships for its Oceania Cruises brand.

Construction of the new Allura-Class ships represents NCLH’s next phase of OceaniaNEXT initiative and is expected to require an investment of around €575m per vessel.

To be designed by Fincantieri, the ships are scheduled to be delivered in 2022 and 2025.

Upon completion, each of the two 67,000 gross tonne ships will be able to carry around 1,200 guests.

Both the mid-size cruise vessels will be equipped with the design and amenities of NCLH’s Marina and Riviera portfolio of ships.

NCLH president and CEO Frank Del Rio said: “This new class of ships will further elevate the already best-in-class guest experience at Oceania Cruises and meaningfully strengthen demand from both new and loyal returning guests, which will ultimately drive further returns for shareholders.”

NCLH currently has ten ships on order that are expected to be delivered all the way in 2027. Among those ships, seven are for the Norwegian Cruise Line, two for Oceania Cruises and one for Regent Seven Seas Cruises.

This year, NCLH is expected to receive a new ship, Norwegian Encore.

Fincantieri CEO Giuseppe Bono said: “The order we are announcing today, indeed, reiterates not only our first place in the luxury sector, but at the same time it further strengthens an unprecedented leadership in the cruise sector, with a backlog of 55 vessels to be built for most of the brands operating on this market, and deliveries extending all the way to 2027.”

Based in Italy, Fincantieri has so far built more than 7,000 vessels. The company currently operates 20 shipyards across four continents.
