US-based FlyTahoe has collaborated with Swedish technology company Candela to introduce a new electric ferry at the Lake Tahoe, a freshwater lake in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, California.
The Candela P-12 electric ferry is expected to help alleviate the growing congestion problem faced by the 15 million visitors to the region each year.
The hydrofoil electric ferry is designed to reduce travel time by offering a 30-minute cross-lake service.
With its capacity for 30 passengers and ample space for sports equipment, the P-12 is expected to become a vital link to the region’s ski resorts and biking trails.
FlyTahoe founder and CEO Ryan Meinzer said: “This fusion of flight and electric technologies not only unveils a powerful new business opportunity with nearly 10x operational efficiency but also offers an unmatched customer experience of comfort and safety.
“We’ll not just be moving people faster; we’ll be boosting socio-economic mobility by connecting the north and south of the lake.”

By GlobalDataThe P-12, claimed to be the world’s first electric hydrofoil ferry, features hydrofoil technology that enables it to glide above the water at high speeds. The technology reduces drag and energy consumption by 80% compared to traditional vessels, according to its developers.
This design allows the ferry to operate entirely on renewable electricity, offering an eco-friendly alternative to fossil fuels.
The vessel’s advanced Flight Controller technology ensures a silent and smooth ride by constantly adjusting the hydrofoils.
With a cruising speed of 25kt, the P-12 will connect the northern and southern shores of Lake Tahoe in under 30 minutes.
The P-12’s electric propulsion system is said to support the “Keep Tahoe Blue” initiative, in addition to safeguarding the lake’s ecosystem by preventing oil spills and minimising underwater noise pollution.
The Candela P-12’s debut in the US follows its successful launch in Stockholm last month.
Candela CEO and founder Gustav Hasselskog said: “We’re proud to partner with FlyTahoe to bring this revolutionary technology to the US for the very first time.
“This will not only ensure more efficient commuting around Lake Tahoe and unlock business possibilities for waterfront communities, but it’s also a big step toward unlocking the potential of US waterways for zero-emission transport.”
