Sweden’s Maritime Administration has awarded Artemis Technologies the contract to supply an all-electric Artemis EF-12 Pilot boat.
This move aligns with Sweden’s national climate goals and the Fossil-Free Sweden Initiative, marking a pivotal step in the country’s journey to a fossil-free maritime industry.
The new pilot boat will measure 12.5m in length and a width of 4.7m with a draft of 2.2m and a total displacement of 11,700kg.
The Artemis EF-12 is designed to ‘fly’ above the water at speeds over 14 knots, owing to its advanced hydrofoil technology. With the push of a button, the boat’s commander can activate the take-off, leveraging airfoils to elevate the vessel and reduce water drag.
This technology not only ensures zero emissions but also optimises energy usage, resulting in a smoother, quieter ride.
It is particularly suited for the rigorous demands of pilotage operations. Additionally, the reduced wake impact from the hydrofoils means less disturbance to marine life, shorelines, and stationary ships.

By GlobalDataArtemis Technologies CEO Dr Iain Percy said: “Our eFoiler® technology represents the future of maritime transport and we are excited to deliver a vessel that aligns with Sweden’s bold vision for a fossil-free maritime industry. The Artemis EF-12 Pilot boat will not only be emission-free in operation but will also deliver the high performance, reliability and efficiency needed for such a critical function.”
The introduction of the eFoiler-powered vessel is a first for Nordic waters. Scheduled for commissioning in spring 2026, the boat will play a crucial role in the SMA’s mission to facilitate safe, and sustainable maritime transport.
It will be instrumental in guiding ships through Sweden’s offshore shipping lanes and contribute to the national target of zero emissions in the maritime sector by 2045.
The investment in this pilot boat has been supported by a government grant awarded to the Norwegian Maritime Administration, aimed at accelerating the transition to a fossil-free ship fleet between 2022 and 2024.
