APM Terminals Poti and Poti New Terminals Consortium have submitted a conceptual design to the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, seeking permission to start construction of the first phase of expansion at Poti Sea Port.
The design involves the construction, development and operation of a new breakwater, as well as a 700m quay wall at 14.5m water depth for dry bulk, containerised and general cargo facilities.
A number of modern equipment such as ship-to-shore cranes will be installed at the port.
Expansion of Poti Port is expected to include 25ha of land for yard bulk operation and covered facilities to store various types of cargo, including grain, ore and minerals.
APM Terminals Poti managing director Klaus Laursen said: “After high-level and in-depth negotiations with authorities, cargo owners, equity partners and financial institutions, we concluded that Poti will continue as the prime access to the Caucasian and the Central Asian markets.
“We believe that we have the skills, ability and expertise to contribute to the economy of Georgia by persisting in our journey to further develop the Poti Sea Port.”

By GlobalDataThe upcoming bulk port at Poti will be designed to handle up to 60,000t/vessel of cargo, catering to cargo owners in Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, and other central Asian countries.
The expansion is set to create around 250 jobs for local people and more than 900 positions in related industries.
Laursen further added: “Poti Sea Port, owned and managed by APM Terminals, has a well-established market position and can, based on the existing infrastructure in and around Poti, offer a strong platform for continued growth.
“With the introduction of modern technology, we are confident that Poti will remain the most effective and efficient logistical solution for our existing and future customers.”
In 2011, APM Terminals bought the rights to operate Poti Sea Port, which is currently equipped with 15 berths for cargo and RoRo services, 2,900m of quay length, and more than 20 quay cranes.
