APM Terminals Maasvlakte II has commissioned Konecranes to supply an Automated Horizontal Transport System, marking a significant move towards doubling the terminal’s capacity by 2027.
The order includes up to 71 Lift Automated Guided Vehicles (Lift AGVs), expanding the system to handle over 140 Lift AGVs, as well as a third battery exchange station, and virtual reality simulation software.
The procurement of this system is a strategic component of APM Terminals’ plan to expand and establish Maasvlakte II (MVII) as its largest fully automated terminal in Europe.
This system’s delivery and commissioning are scheduled to commence in 2025.
The terminal’s area spans 130 hectares, featuring a 2,000m long, deep-sea quay and a 500m barge quay.
APM Terminals MVII managing director Harold Kunst said: “The high-quality equipment from Konecranes has met our expectations time and time again. With this follow-up order for an electrified automated transport system, we are laying a reliable foundation to meet our ambitious growth and CO2 reduction targets, and we can also serve our customers well at the expanded terminal.”

By GlobalDataKonecranes’ commitment extends beyond equipment delivery to include integration, commissioning, and automation services.
The addition of the new Lift AGVs is pivotal for the terminal’s expansion, promising a smooth integration with both the current setup and incoming cranes.
The establishment of a third battery exchange station will further enhance operational efficiency by minimising travel distances for the AGVs.
A standout feature of Konecranes’ delivery is the CONTROLS Emulation software, a ‘digital twin’ of the terminal that provides real-time operational simulation.
Konecranes Director Automated Horizontal Transport Ralf Konnerth said: “We are proud to continue our long-term partnership with APM Terminals and to continue with this crucial contribution to their expansion project. This confirms the confidence APM Terminals places in our systems and expertise.”
This technology will improve safety and efficiency by offering a risk-free training environment for new operators and allowing continuous testing of efficiency improvements without disrupting ongoing operations.
