Swiss automation firm ABB has won an order of nearly $27m to deliver power, automation and control systems, as well as real-time performance analytics and electric propulsion, for Eneti’s two newbuild wind turbine installation vessels (WTIV).
Eneti will receive the $330m ship duo from South Korean shipyard Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) between Q3 2024 and Q2 2025.
The newbuilds will be able to deploy turbines offshore at depths of up to 65m.
Furthermore, they will be designed to operate on zero-carbon fuels after future modifications.
For increased sustainability in operations, the ships will be installed with a battery from ABB.
ABB’s integrated automation, power and electric propulsion systems, including closed-ring and closed-bus solutions, are expected to enhance the capabilities of Eneti’s ships.

By GlobalDataIn a statement, ABB said: “The closed bus-tie DP2 system’s enhanced fault resistance ensures precise positioning as well as safe and predictable performance during operation. Closed-bus solutions are less sensitive to network disturbances and reduce risks of power and propulsion loss.
“They also achieve better running engine utilisation to improve efficiency and support advanced remote diagnostics.”
ABB will also deploy an energy storage solution for minimising fuel consumption, wear and tear, and engine running hours.
With ABB’s battery power, it is said that the WTIVs will have better operational flexibility, offering ‘spinning reserve’ backup power, ‘peak shaving’ for short-term load variation and improved dynamic performance.
Due to ABB’s digital technologies providing more availability, the ships are said to also support increased profitability.
ABB Marine and Ports marine systems business line manager Rune Braastad said: “This contract further confirms that our solutions meet the needs of a very demanding market and are recognised for their operational and environmental performance.
“The Eneti ‘seal of approval‘ acknowledges their preference for our sustainable hybrid propulsion technology and extensive experience with dynamically positioned (DP) vessels, and WTIVs in particular. We look forward to supporting Eneti through the project phase of these state-of-the-art vessels and in the next phase of its offshore wind market journey.”
Last November, ABB introduced a new technology, ABB Ability OneBox – Marine Signals Monitoring (OneBox), for collecting and recording performance data onboard ships.
