Technology company ABB has received a contract from boat builder All American Marine to supply a hybrid-electric propulsion system for a new ocean sampling catamaran.
The 63ft vessel, which will be commissioned by the Orange County Sanitation District (OC San) in California, is expected to be delivered in 2027.
It is intended to support ocean sampling and scientific research while adhering to California’s zero-emissions standards.
The catamaran will be powered by Cummins QSB 6.7 engines and ABB’s Series Hybrid technology.
It will feature a BorgWarner energy storage system capable of storing up to 588kW of energy, ensuring 30% of its operational power is emission-free.
This aligns with the California Air Resources Board’s requirements for zero-emission capable hybrid vessels, which call for a minimum of 30% annual power from zero-emission sources.

By GlobalDataEquipped with advanced research tools such as a Teledyne acoustic doppler current profiler and an Okeanus dual-drum winch, the vessel will facilitate complex oceanographic studies and data collection.
It will also feature a deck and labs, accommodating over ten scientists for extended research missions.
ABB Marine & Ports’ US Marine Systems sales head Drew Orvieto said: “Our hybrid-electric propulsion technology is an ideal choice for a broad range of vessel types, including environmental monitoring and research vessels.
“ABB takes great pride in working together with vessel operators and shipyards in the US and around the world looking to decarbonise their operations.”
Construction of the vessel will occur at All American Marine’s facility in Bellingham, Washington state. Post-construction, the vessel will undergo sea trials to validate its performance.
The vessel will play a crucial role in OC San’s Ocean Monitoring Programme, which ensures the ocean remains safe for recreational activities, marine life, and fisheries.
It is anticipated to become a crucial asset for marine monitoring and research along the Southern California coast.
All American Marine president and CEO Ron Wille said: “This project represents a significant new investment by OC San in protecting public health and the environment and has also been designed with sustainability at its heart.”
