Chinese state-owned multinational shipping company Cosco Shipping has inaugurated the Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) shore power system for its Taurus containership vessel.
Cosco Shipping’s Taurus vessel underwent a ship integration test at the HHLA Tollerort terminal in Germany, involving partnerships from Siemens and HPA and demonstrating the vessel’s first use of shore power.
According to Cosco, the company’s shipping vessels are already equipped with integrated technical components for shore power supply.
Cosco Shipping president Mingfeng Wang emphasised the sustainability path that this partnership has established, saying: “For 40 years, the shipping company Cosco Shipping has been linked to the Tollerort terminal through a successful business relationship.
“Cosco Shipping and HHLA are on our way to achieving the goal of carbon neutrality to fulfilling the new requirements of the International Maritime Organization’s MARPOL Convention relating to the “International Shipping Regulations on Carbon Intensity”, reduce greenhouse gas emissions from vessels at berth, build a green and low-carbon supply chain and protect the earth’s ecological environment.”
The Cosco Shipping Taurus containership, which was built in 2018, has 20119 TEU carrying capacity.

By GlobalDataThis collaboration is also in line with the EU Green Deal, as according to the directive on new laws for the deployment of alternative fuels, European ports must offer shore power infrastructure for vessels to connect to after 2030.
In addition, starting in 2030, the FuelEU Maritime plan requires passenger ships and containers to use on-shore power supply for all electrical demands while anchored at the quayside in key EU ports.
The EU Commission has stated that this will not only reduce the carbon footprint of maritime transport but also significantly reduce local air pollution in port areas.
HHLA chairwoman Angela Titzrath emphasised the importance of Hamburg’s port operations, stating: “Shore-side power stations at HHLA’s terminals in Hamburg are an important contribution towards the decarbonisation of the port and the logistics chain.
“We are pleased that the shore-side power stations at our terminals have been established, making it possible to reliably supply shore-side electricity to our customers’ ships equipped for that technology. This makes the Port of Hamburg a pioneer within Europe.”
