Carnival Cruise Line has started upgrade and refurbishment works at Long Beach Cruise Terminal facility in the US, with the aim of facilitating the handling larger ships and improving overall operations at the site.  

Carnival’s existing occupancy in the terminal will be increased from 66,000ft² to 142,000ft² as part of the upgrade.

The portside ‘cold-ironing’ will also be expanded to allow larger ships to plug into the local electric grid and reduce exhaust emissions while docked.

The area surrounding the geodesic dome that currently houses the cruise terminal and the adjacent Queen Mary attraction is also scheduled for improvement.

Carnival is expected to have full access to the dome for its various cruise operations upon completion of the renovation.

Carnival has been operating the Long Beach Cruise Terminal since 2003, and the site is currently the only privately operated cruise terminal in the US. The company currently operates three ships from the location, including Carnival Inspiration, Carnival Imagination, and Carnival Miracle.

The cruise brand previously announced plans to replace its Carnival Miracle ship with the larger Carnival Splendor vessel next year.
