Digital maritime platform RightShip has been chosen by the Port of London Authority (PLA) to provide data analysis as part of the port’s decarbonisation efforts.
The port will be using the data company’s Maritime Emissions Portal (MEP), which uses vessel movement data to identify potential areas to reduce PLA’s environmental impact.
PLA chief executive Robin Mortimer said: “As the largest port in the UK, covering 95 miles of the Thames and handling over 50 million tonnes of cargo annually, we have a responsibility to lead the way on the sustainability transition.
“This partnership will provide us with valuable data and insights to effectively measure emissions and develop targeted strategies to not only reduce the environmental impact on the river and estuary but also improve the air quality and health of local communities.”
According to RightShip, the MEP uses an “energy-based modelling approach” to calculate vessel emissions and measure them against targets set by the PLA and adhering to United Nations guidelines.
RightShip’s executive director EMEA Andrew Roberts described the MEP as a “crucial tool” for the PLA’s decarbonisation targets: “The current moment is a critical one for maritime decarbonisation with indicative checkpoints being set by the IMO at MEPC80 for a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

By GlobalData“This will require players across the maritime sector to take swift action on decarbonisation now and ports have a key role to play in this. Our MEP is a crucial tool for ports and terminals to measure and reduce their emissions while improving air quality in their ports for the benefit of local communities.”
The partnership with RightShip is one of a number of ways that the PLA has been attempting to lower its impact on the environment. It also recently revealed its first fully electric remotely operated survey vessel, which will be used to improve maintenance and surveying.
