MAN Energy Solutions has received approval in principle (AiP) from the Italian classification society RINA for its methanol-ready four-stroke engine.
The AiP encompasses an upgrade concept for the MAN L/V 32/44CR engine to support dual-fuel conversion for operating on methanol.
It also allows outer ship hulls to be used as bunker tanks, which helps to boost on-board fuel-storage capacity.
RINA Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) special projects manager Patrizio Di Francesco said: “This AiP is based on our recently published Methyl Alcohol Fuelled Ready notation. Methanol is a fuel with a lot of potential as a clean, carbon-neutral fuel and the industry is already showing concrete appreciation of it. “
MAN Energy is engaged in the development of solutions for methanol, which has the capacity to become carbon-neutral when synthesised with green hydrogen.
Compared to conventional marine fuels, methanol is believed to be less hazardous to marine life.

By GlobalDataMAN Energy Solutions new marine solutions head Elvis Ettenhofer said: “This approval by RINA is significant as we move towards net zero.
“A major advantage of our four-stroke portfolio is its inherent retrofit potential, which enables us to provide shipowners with cost-effective solutions and flexibility regarding future fuels.”
Last week, MAN Energy secured orders from South Korea’s Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries and HJ Shipbuilding & Construction (HJSC) for the delivery of G80 dual-fuel methanol engines.
