STX France has signed a new memorandum of understanding (MoU) with MSC Cruises for the construction of two 200,000GRT liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered mega cruise ships.

The deal also includes options for two additional vessels.

The new cruise ships will be part of MSC Cruises’ World Class series of vessels, and will feature 2,760 cabins and will be capable of carrying around 6,850 guests, which is set to be the highest passenger capacity in the global cruise fleet.

MSC Cruises' new ships will also be equipped with a new generation of LNG-powered engines and a new wastewater treatment system, among others. Both vessels will measure 330m in length and 47m in breath.

Delivery of the vessels is planned for 2022 and 2024 respectively, while the options are expected to be delivered by 2025 and 2026.

MSC Cruises executive chairman Pierfrancesco Vago said: “These new vessels will further expand our partnership with STX France all the way to 2026, with up to seven additional innovative ships to be built during this period.”

The company further noted that its World Class vessels' ‘Y’ shape structure enable panoramic sea views and increase the number of balcony cabins available.

The vessel’s G bow is vertically positioned at a 90 degree angle and has been designed to improve stability, hydrodynamics and overall guest comfort.

MSC Cruises has also taken delivery of its new MSC Meraviglia cruise ship from STX France as part of a separate development.

The 171,598GRT ship is able to accommodate 5,714 guests.
