Japan-based classification society ClassNK has released the latest version of its structural design support software for container carriers, known as ‘PrimeShip-HULL for Container Carriers’.
The solution is equipped with prescriptive calculation and direct strength assessment software, and is intended to enhance the quality and efficiency of ship design processes.
Its prescriptive calculation software enables designers to carry out assessments for structural strength requirements, including yield strength and fatigue strength assessments.
The software makes these assessments according to the ClassNK’s Rules for the Survey and Construction of Steel Ships, along with the longitudinal strength requirements specified in IACS Unified Requirements S11A (Longitudinal Strength Standard for Container Ships).
It also incorporates a function that creates a model of transverse members and longitudinal members, and can be used to analyse the outside of cylindrical parts of a hull's structure, including the fore and aft components.
The solution's direct strength assessment software now features an additional function for the torsional strength assessment of the hull.

By GlobalDataClassNK also noted the company has amended its rules of torsional strength based on latest research results in order to increase the safety of container ships.
Designers can now use the updated solution to conduct torsional strength assessments by superimposing stress components generated by working hull girder load onto an FE model of an entire ship.
ClassNK Rule Development Division director Dr Toshiro Arima said: “To promote container carrier safety, ClassNK released amendments to its Rules and Guidance for the Survey and Construction of Steel Ships on 1 June 2017.
“In a further demonstration of its unwavering commitment to safety, ClassNK updated ‘PrimeShip-HULL for Container Carriers’ to incorporate these latest rule amendments.
“The software update also including various improvements based upon users’ feedback will further increase the efficiency and quality of container carrier structural design.”
ClassNK is actively engaged in multiple ship related activities and services to help ensure protection of human life and property at sea, as well as the protection of the marine environment.
